Columbia University Works with Seal to Protect AI Climate Model Data

The Columbia Climate Data Science Lab (CDSL) and Seal completed a proof of concept project to store CDSL's data securely in Seal's blockchain-powered storage platform

Columbia University partnered with Seal Storage Technology to store and manage its critical climate model data. Seal Storage Technology, known for its blockchain-based cloud storage platform, provided a Columbia University lab with immutable data storage. The Columbia Climate Data Science Lab (CDSL) and Seal completed a sponsored proof of concept (PoC) project to store CDSL's data securely in Seal's blockchain-powered storage platform. This partnership not only demonstrates groundbreaking advancements in data storage but also fosters a strong collaborative relationship between the two organizations. CDSL leverages climate science and open-source software to advance oceanography and climate science by creating “powerful, scalable, and sustainable computational tools.” Over 1PiB of CDSL data has been certified by the Filecoin ecosystem as publicly accessible data. During the project, Seal served as CDSL's exclusive data storage provider. Seal upholds stringent data security measures, ensuring that all data involved in this project will be utilized solely for Columbia-approved purposes. The Columbia Climate Data Science Lab sees several strengths in migrating to Web3 decentralized cloud storage, including:

  • Decentralization: Web3 operates on decentralized blockchain technology, which reduces the control of central authorities and promotes a more distributed and democratic system. This can enhance transparency and reduce the risk of single points of failure.
  • Trust and Transparency: Blockchain technology provides a transparent and immutable ledger of transactions. This can be particularly valuable in climate data science, where trust and data integrity are crucial.
  • Security: Blockchain utilizes cryptographic methods and consensus mechanisms to secure data and transactions. This can enhance the security of climate-related data and protect it from unauthorized access or manipulation.
  • Data Ownership: Blockchain empowers CDSL to have greater control over their data. In the context of climate data, this can allow data providers and researchers to maintain ownership and control over their valuable datasets.
  • Interoperability: Web3 aims to establish standardized protocols and interoperable systems. This can facilitate the integration of various climate data sources and tools, making it easier for researchers to access and analyze data from different providers.
  • Resilience: Decentralized networks, which are a key component of Web3, can be more resilient to disruptions and attacks. This can ensure the availability of climate data even in adverse conditions.
  • Immutable Records: Once data is recorded on a blockchain, it becomes practically immutable. This can be valuable for preserving the historical record of climate data for  CDSL, which is essential for long-term research and policy decisions.
  • Global Collaboration: Blockchain technologies are inherently global and borderless, fostering CDSL collaboration and data sharing on a global scale, which is critical for addressing climate change, a global challenge.

These strengths of Web3 and blockchain technology align with the goals of climate data science, which often requires robust, secure, and transparent data systems to inform climate-related research, policies, and actions.
